HOUSING/OCCUPATION: Residence #032, Constructions Worker

BACKGROUND: The Hero's Wiki has the best history for Emmet that I can find, but here are my own notes:

Emmet is the hero of the story in The LEGO Movie. When he accidentally finds the strange piece, known as the Piece of Resistance, Emmet can no longer keep his peaceful life as a construction worker. From then on, the Piece of Resistance is stuck to his back and he becomes known as "The Special." The Special is a person spoken of in a prophesy given eight and a half years ago by a mystic wizard named Vitruvius who deemed the Special would be the most interesting and talented person in the universe. Bearing the weight of the world's future on his shoulders Emmet goes into hiding with Wyldstyle, a spunky girl who catches his attention (and saves his butt too many times to count), and together with her and several other MasterBuilders he is taken on a wild journey to save the universe!

The Bad Guy, Lord Business, wants to keep the LEGO world in order, frozen in perfection. He plans to force all the peoples in all the LEGO lands to remain stuck still forever by using a dangerous weapon known as The Kragle. Lord Business sends his most trusted and loyal minion Bad Cop out to capture Emmet and his friends. Emmet and Wyldstyle manage to make it to the base world of the MasterBuilders, people who can craft creatively with all the blocks in the world, but when Emmet reveals that he's not a MasterBuilder himself he loses the faith of all the others. Bad Cop manages to capture most of the MasterBuilders in a huge battle but Emmet, Wyldstyle, Batman, Vitruvius, Unikitty (a unicorn kitty cat), and Benny (a 1980's spaceman) all manage to escape through the use of a submarine. At first, the exhausted MasterBuilders are discouraged when all Emmet could contribute was a Double Decker Couch, a useless invention in their opinions. But when the submarine takes on water due to its ramshackle nature Emmet's couch is the only thing that remains intact, so they survive by hiding in the cushions.

Bad Cop leaves the LEGO ocean with all of his underlings after determining that Emmet and his team have been neutralized when their submarine's debris scatter through the waves. The couch floats to the surface and the team is picked up my Metalbeard, a pirate MasterBuilder who had faced Lord Business once before. He believed that Emmet's Double Decker Couch was overlooked because the idea was so bad and seemingly useless that Lord Business and his minions would never consider it a threat. With that as their motivation the MasterBuilders turn to Emmet for an off-the-wall plan to take Lord Business down.

Emmet's plan was a haphazard one and it required the other MasterBuilders to follow his instructions, something they were loathe to do. Instructions are restricting and MasterBuilders crave freedom, but they listened to Emmet and successfully infiltrated Lord Business' office building. In the midst of their work Wyldstyle and Emmet take the moment to confess a few things. Wyldstyle admits she wanted to be the one to find the Piece of Resistance; she wanted to be the Special. Emmet then tells her that when she first found him and said he was special that was the first time anyone had looked at him and praised him in such a way, and he wanted to be the kind of person she thought was interesting and amazing. It was then that Wyldstyle told him her real name, Lucy, and Emmet used that name for her thereafter.

Just before Emmet could cap the Kragle with the Piece of Resistance Lucy was captured and Emmet lost his focus, causing the plan to fail. They were taken into Lord Business' Think Tank, a room full of MasterBuilders who were kept in cells and their brilliant minds exploited to help craft Lord Business' perfect instructions to bring perfection to the world. It turns out Lord Business himself is also no MasterBuilder or creative mind, but he lets Emmet know that he could never be nearly as interesting or special as himself. Vitruvius is killed in battle and Emmet loses his mentor, the one MasterBuilder who was always encouraging him, and before he dies he imparts the knowledge that the prophesy he had circulated for years about The Special was really just made up.

For a short moment everything seems lost; Lord Business disposes of the piece of resistance by throwing it out into the Infinite Abyss of Nothingness, a strange void with no discernible way back. Then Business straps Emmet to the battery that powers the destruction sequence of the Think Tank and escapes, determined to watch his plan to freeze everyone in place come to fruition. While Emmet is in despair, certain he has no power to save anyone else, he is visited in his darkest hour by the ghost of Vitruvius who tells him he is special as long as he believes. Emmet still doesn't feel special but he does feel like he must save the other MasterBuilders. As the time starts to run low on the self-destruction sequence Emmet manages to roll towards the ledge that overlooks the Abyss. He says his goodbyes and imparts the Special role to Lucy before he jumps, taking the battery with him and saving the other MasterBuilders.

After falling through the Abyss Emmet finds himself in a strange world. It is no longer the same LEGO land he is used to but instead it is the "real world" where he encounters a child named Finn, a creative soul, and the boy's father, a very meticulous man who wants order and perfection. Finn wants to play with the LEGO lands and just let his creative mind be free to craft whatever he pleases but his father wants to permanently glue them all down in an orderly way through the use of Krazy Glue, what Emmet can only see is an endless supply of Kragles. Back on the LEGO land of Bricksburg Finn has crafted so many different and unique creations to show the battle against Lord Business. But his father goes around and begins to take them apart, and Emmet realizes that as things are Lord Business will win. Emmet is reunited with the Piece of Resistance (the lid to the bottle of Krazy Glue known to the LEGO landers as The Kragle) and with Finn's help Emmet is able to return to his world.

When he returns Emmet finds that he can suddenly see everything, the various names and numbers of the pieces that make up the world and their uses. He realizes this is what it is like to be a MasterBuilder, and Emmet creates a massive mecha suit out of construction truck pieces to get him to Lord Business. Lucy and the other MasterBuilders were able to escape the Think Tank and with the help of the normal citizens of the worlds and even Bad Cop, they attempt to take down all the robots and Micro Managers blocking Emmet's way. Although he reaches Lord Business with the Piece of Resistance Emmet's foot gets glued down and it seems Business will win. However, Emmet extends his hand to Lord Business and tells him that he is actually special and interesting and all the people who create things are inspired by one another, including by Lord Business. He wants Lord Business to know he doesn't have to be the Bad Guy; he can be the Special too, as long as he believes in himself. His sentiments touch Lord Business and he himself willingly places the top back onto the tube of Krazy Glue, doing away with the Kragle for good.

(In the Real World, Finn has a heartfelt moment with his father who, after seeing all the amazing things that Finn had created by himself without instructions, realizes that his need for order had been holding back a lot of the fun they could have been having together. They share a hug and together they use mineral spirits to unglue all the LEGO figures so they can freely play with them however they please.)

Emmet reunites with his friends and Lucy becomes his girlfriend, her previous boyfriend (Batman) willingly admitting that they were meant for each other. That was not going to be the end of their adventures, but the threat of the Kragle was defeated and everyone in all the LEGO lands could now interact and revel in their creative freedom. It is within these few seconds of peace that I will be bringing Emmet into the game.

PERSONALITY: Emmet is a generic construction worker and everyone he worked with at the construction site only saw him as a face in the crowd. The truth was Emmet always followed the rules. He wanted to fit in so bad that he would do anything to show that he was part of the team. His favorites were all everyone else's favorites at the time and he never had an original thought ever. But as the movie progresses the true Emmet begins to show. He still looks pretty generic but Emmet is earnest and innocent and kind.

He thinks of the best in others even when others think little (or even nothing) about him. Emmet can be a little spacey, allowing rainbows and jokes to distract him from vital bits of information, and he gets frightened easily, his flight instinct kicking in before his fight. He's also openly friendly and helpful in any way he can be. When he is given a task he wants to complete it. And above all else, Emmet is a team player who is perfectly happy to follow and will stand up to lead when called upon.

Emmet's original ideas tend to start out kinda lame because he's so used to just following instructions. But he actually does have good ideas once he has the freedom to actually express his opinions on things. Although his Double Decker Couch isn't something amazing it still manages to save them from drowning in the ocean and while his original plan to take down the Kragle was foiled, he did successfully get them to infiltrate the office building; they just ran out of time to complete their goal.

Emmet is also very encouraging. At first he has no faith in himself, but he can easily see the potential in others. Once he saw that his plans were not complete failures and he was able to help everyone in some ways Emmet grew to have more confidence in himself and strove to do his best despite his own flaws and fears. And Emmet has a lot of fears. He not incredibly brave as a rule, but he will strive to do his best and battle through his own cowardice when his friends and world are in danger.

POWER:
(1 of 3) The power of the MasterBuilder! Emmet can craft a variety of vehicles, costumes, and props from assembling various LEGO pieces to suit his needs. He doesn't have to have wheels already pre-made to make a car, he can simply use what is available to him and build things up from scratch. The items he builds also have the functions of their real world equivalents. For example, a LEGO jet plane would fly like a regular jet plane (despite not having a gas motor) and a LEGO wrecking ball would have the abilities of a regular wrecking ball but since it would be in relative size to Emmet (or however big he could conceivable craft it) the damage it could do would be scaled down to a wrecking ball of that size.

MasterBuilder power is both as extensive and limited as its creator's mind. If Emmet cannot conceive of something, he cannot build it. An example of this can be seen with the character of Benny the spaceman who is also a MasterBuilder but has no will, desire or thought to create anything other than spaceships. Being a very standard and generic LEGO man who works construction, Emmet's creations will be fairly general without a unique touch beyond perhaps adding in construction themes and additions. At the end of the movie he creates a mech suit out of demolition balls and heavy construction machinery, so it was a demolition mecha. Other than that, Emmet has not created anything else with his MasterBuilder powers in canon but if he did, they would likely be fairly generic looking despite managing to use whatever he can at his disposal to create it.

MasterBuilders also tend to work very fast. Emmet is not the fastest but he can still craft things in very swift time. In the LEGO world this seems to be just a few seconds but since Emmet will be in a more "real world" setting his time will be stretched to a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the complexity of his project. Something akin to a simple machine, such as a pulley or a skateboard, would only take a few minutes. A small vehicle could take fifteen minutes to half an hour. A higher powered vehicle could take a few hours.

MasterBuilders also have the ability to morph one project into another, and this generally takes a less time than crafting from scratch. Lucy/Wyldstyle can edit her projects from a motorcycle to a jet plane in just a matter of seconds, but she also has years of practice under her belt. Emmet would conceivable manage to reach this stage of MasterBuilding at some point but currently he has never tried to do it nor has he been given the chance to practice it. He will likely fail his first several times before he begins to succeed. It's one thing to build up from all the scratch materials you can find and create something grand. It's another thing to take a limited amount of resources and completely edit them into an entirely new craft without the help of additional material, especially if you didn't prepare for the possibilities beforehand.

Another big limiter for Emmet's MasterBuilder ability is size. Emmet is not used to crafting or conceiving of anything beyond the size of LEGO standards. A jet he builds can seem big to him because he made it to suit a person his size, but the idea of crafting a jet that's a human's size is not only hard to conceive for someone so incredibly small but virtually impossible to craft without breaking down a sizable chunk of city streets, buildings, and other miscellaneous objects that could be found. For this reason, I believe it's impossible for Emmet to create projects that are bigger than necessary for a toy of only a few inches to manipulate. As a construction worker and open-minded about his surroundings, it's possible Emmet could help others who are larger than him come up with schematics for designing projects for humans and other large creatures. However, he would not be able to build such things by himself using his MasterBuilder power.

Emmet also cannot create weapons that shoot bullets or are otherwise overly violent. He could create a pulley system or trebuchet that could launch larger objects like stones (again, it would be relative to Emmet's small stature) but such projectiles are relatively harmless. He is from a PG movie and neither Emmet nor his friends ever crafted weapons that did more than bludgeon or deflect. Also, most of the violence was against robots. (The only non-robot bad guy character to be hurt by a hero was Bad Cop, and it was Batman who fought him in hand-to-hand combat.) Emmet is also more likely to try talking his way through to someone than to resort to violence.

(2 of 3) I would also like to give him a power specifically for this setting, and that is the power of LEGO-fication. As long as the object he picks up is non-living then it can be LEGO-fied and used to construct whatever he wishes to build. For example, he can pick up a small rock and it could turn into a generic two by two square brick (aka a 4211387 2x2 brick). Another example could be if he were to pick up a leaf it would turn into the palm leaf (aka a 2518 part). This LEGO-fication ability would only activate when Emmet is intentionally building something with his Master Building ability or in cases where he absolutely needs something LEGO-fied for him to manipulate it. For example, when he gets his communicator it could be LEGO-fied so that it shrinks down to his size and he is able to use it easily, rather than having to lug a huge communicator with him everywhere he goes.

(3 of 3) And last, but not least, I would also like to have Emmet keep his LEGO form while still managing to move with the same agency as he does in his own world. Emmet will be small enough to be held by anyone, but also leaves him small enough to find plenty of hiding places making it both a strength and a weakness. He may only be two or three inches tall but that just means he can be an underdog hero!

FINAL NOTES: Emmet is a LEGO person but surprisingly no one in the movie ever uses the word "LEGO" (not even Finn and his father) so I believe it can be assumed he does not know this brand name. He knows he is not human but he is still a person and sees his world as something both a part of the "real world" and set apart from it. It's a complicated relationship.
